Hello again, It has been a while since I last wrote and a lot has happened since then. First of all I finished playing for Israeli national team and I must say that it was one of the best experiences of my life. I had a chance to be a part of something special and I am thankful for it. I traveled to countries I had not previously been to, was able to play some good basketball, and best of all I was around some great people. We eventually qualified although in the end it was not as special as the work we put in- at the end of the tournament FIBA allowed more teams to qualify than were originally allowed to advance to next summers Eurobasket tournament.
I went home for 2 weeks and had a chance to spend some quality time with my family and friends. It gave me a chance to relax and reorganize and get ready for what I think will be a great season for Maccabi. I think our team this season has a great combination of talent and chemistry.
As you now know I have officially changed my last name to Blu and many people have asked why. I am not the first professional athlete or person to change their surname and my reasons are important to me. Growing up in Los Angeles California with Bluthenthal as my last name was not easy, nobody could pronounce it correctly and I was teased a lot for it. Most people assume I'm saying Blumenthal and spell it that way. A lot of people call me "Blu" as my nickname anyways so I figured I would change it officially. I am married now and I have 2 beautiful daughters and I want them to have the last name Blu- has a nice ring to it. My older brother is still Bluthenthal and so are his 2 sons so the name will live on. Anyway, I hope that soon the world will come to know me and respect me as David Blu.
Now its finally time to start the official games of 2010-11 season and I am more excited about our chances of doing well than I have ever been. This year we are trying to build something special and get back to the winning ways Maccabi and it's fans have grown accustomed to and expect from us. We have already won our first title of the Israeli Winner Cup Champs after defeating Rishon, Netanya, and our arch rival Jerusalem. It has been 3 years since we have had that title and it is really a great feeling to have it back.
Now its off to Vittoria Spain to play our 1st Euroleague game against a very good team in Caja Laboral. Every trip from Israel is a long and tiring one and this is one of the longest. We leave Tuesday afternoon after practice and it will be a 10 hour journey including a 5 hr flight to Madrid Spain , 2 hour layover then 1 hour flight to Vittoria. After what I am sure will be a tough game, we will have a few hours to rest in the hotel and then make that same 10 hour trip back to Israel although somehow the trip is always a bit sweeter after defeating a team in their home gym.
Well that's it for now, stay tuned for next D Blu Blog.......
