This was supposed to be the most difficult game of the first round of the regular season of the Euroleague. But an incredible first quarter by Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv, destroyed all the predictions. 84-59 over Barcelona in one of the most impressive displays by the Euroleague champions in the last few years.
From 7-5 Maccabi ran 20-0 whilst the stars of the Spanish champions could do nothing about it. On Ilievski and Bodiroga scored in the first period which Maccabi won 26-7. Maccabi's defense was incredible. Deon Thomas, who replaced the injured Niklola Vujcic, was very impressive and so were the others.
Those who thought that with such a lead Maccabi will not be so determined, realize straight away that this was not the cause. The margin increased to 36-14 and at half tome 44-26. At the end of the third 61-42. A first three pointer by Saras made it 68-44 and another triplet by Kommatos made it 81-54. Final margin was 25 points. Maccabi's 8th win vs Barcelona in 19 games since 1981.
Maccabi were behind in rebounds 33-40 but made Barcelona commit 19 turnovers and have only 33% FG in comparison to Maccabi 53%. The hosts also made 11-12 in free throws. Maccabi players had 18 assists to only 7 by the visitors.
