Head coach Guy Goodes said after the game, “After three serious losses, we showed a lot of character and climbed out of the hole we had fallen into. We changed our direction, we worked a little differently, more dynamic and strong, and it helped. After all of the conversations and speeches, at the end of the day it’s the players who are out on the court doing the work, and they did it very well. They also responded well in practice, giving their all. They deserve every compliment.”
“I want to personally thank Pini, who helped me a lot during this tough time. He contributed a lot through his experience and his composure. Now what’s important to me is to have continuity, we must create positive momentum. We celebrated after the win in Berlin and then we got a smack in the head. No way we’re going to celebrate this time. We’re going to keep working hard to correct and improve things.”
Newly-minted team captain Yogev Ohayon added, “It’s a huge and critical win, one that could save an entire season. We received three hard blows recently. Especially after the derby [against Hapoel Tel Aviv] the players realized just how bad the situation was. We pulled ourselves together. The last few days we practiced like crazy, and today you saw on the court how hard we fought and how much we wanted this win. We played for each other, we were super determined. Even though the basketball wasn’t the greatest, we jumped on every ball and made it very clear that this was our game.”
“Our fans and the club deserve some satisfaction, and now we must continue in a new, good way. If there’s a team that knows how to recover from a crisis, it’s Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv. I will always give all my soul, and of course I’m proud to be Maccabi’s captain. I want to dedicate this victory to our teammate and friend, Guy Pnini.”
Brian Randle, who tied the club record with 6 blocks in a Euroleague game, said: “It was a great win, one we got through outstanding team effort. It’s everybody’s victory – the players, the coaches, and the support staff. This win is for Pnini and for Yogi, in his first game as captain. We played strong and sophisticated defense, everyone tore up the court. We’re all very pleased with our performance tonight, but we have to remember it’s only one game. We have to prove ourselves on a regular basis.”
