Maccabi Bests Phoenix Hagen in OT 106-95

Maccabi Bests Phoenix Hagen in OT 106-95

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv defeated Phoenix Hagen 106-95 in a dramatic overtime victory in the team’s training camp in Germany. Sylven Landesberg was simply amazing with 28 points. Brian Randle added an impressive 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Alex Tyus and Jeremy Pargo (6 assists) contributed 16 points each.

Head coach Guy Goodes’ starters were Jeremy Pargo, MarQuez Haynes, Sylven Landesberg, Guy Pnini and Aleks Mari?. Hagen started the game well, giving Maccabi a 6-3 lead after a minute and a half. Pnini stepped up and put Maccabi on top 15-11 with the game running at a faster pace. Landesberg, playing as he did two nights before, has almost reached double figures before the period was halfway over, but the Germans stayed close; after five minutes Maccabi led by one, 18-17. Hagen went on to score five straight, reclaiming the lead, but Nate Linhart scored to narrow the gap, 21-20. Despite points by Randle, Maccabi finished the first quarter down by three, 27-24.

Maccabi was able to take back the lead, 31-29 in the first two minutes of the second quarter, but a German run made it 37-31 a minute and a half later. Pargo and Randle continued to score, but the Germans protected their lead, 40-34 halfway through the period, leading Goodes to call for a time out. Maccabi came back more focused in the final minutes of the half, with Pargo putting Maccabi within two before the buzzer, 42-40.

The Euroleague champs were on fire as the second half got underway, going on an 8-2 scoring run that put them up 48-44 with Pargo, Haynes, Landesberg, Randle and Tyus on the court. The Germans responded, closing to 54-53 halfway through the quarter. The complete domination of Tyus and Randle in the paint, and a three pointer by Linhart, put Maccabi up 65-59 with a minute and a half left in the period. Hagen narrowed the gap with four straight points, 65-63 as time ran out.

The Germans retook the lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but a trey by Landesberg and a dunk by Tyus put Maccabi back on top, 76-73 with six minutes remaining. Hagen tied things up at 80 with 3:15 on the clock, but another great play by Landesberg once again gave Maccabi the lead. A three pointer by Hagen put them up 85-84 with 30 seconds left in the game. Haynes (assist Pargo) put Maccabi back up, but a foul by Pargo sent Hagen to the line, where the tied things up again 87-87 as time ran out.

Landesberg and Pargo played well as the extra period got underway, making it 94-89 Maccabi after two minutes. Tyus fouled out and was replaced by Pnini. A pair of buckets from downtown by Landesberg and Haynes gave Maccabi a comfortable 101-90 lead. Linhart also added points from beyond the arc, making it 106-95 as the game ended.
