“I wanted to see intensity, energy – everything you want to see in a Derby. I’m happy the players did it in the best way possible,” summed up head coach Guy Goodes after Maccabi’s huge 89-72 victory over Hapoel Tel Aviv. “The guys were really into it. It started in the warm up and we saw it in the fighting for the ball, on defense, and on offense.”
“It was one of the best games this season in terms of energy. We could see that the guys were ready. We have 4 days to prepare for Alba, and it’s going to be a big battle there. We saw their game, it was a typical game for Alba. For sure it won’t be easy there. They’ll give the maximum, and are going to be aggressive – we have to be ready for that.”
“It was a team effort,” stated Jeremy Pargo, who led all scorers with 17 points and 8 assists. “We knew that it’s a big game, and there’s another one on Thursday. We had to be aggressive. We have to keep on and improve before the next challenges we face.”
“It was important for us to win,” said Brian Randle, who had a great game with 15 points. “One, this was a Derby game, so obviously that means a lot to the organization and to the fans. That kind of puts you in a different mind set to begin with. And two, we have a big game on Thursday, and Guy’s been saying all year that one game leads into the next, and the next, so it was important for us to have a good practice yesterday, which I think we did, [then we] came out and had a good game. We did some things well, and we got to learn from some things, and hopefully that’ll give us a little bit of an edge going into Thursday.”
Jake Cohen, who also had a great game with 12 points and 8 rebounds, added, “We played hard for the whole 40 minutes, and that was good. It was a team effort, and I’m happy that we fought for all four quarters. We made some adjustments in the second half and came out with better defense.”
“We were a lot more effective, which led to easier baskets and we won. We can come away from this game with a lot of confidence; we played well and I believe that we’ll feel good going into the important game against Alba. It’s going to be a huge fight there; I can’t wait. They’re a tough team, and we’ll need to prepare properly.”
