"We have to scratch and claw to get wins". That's what Devin Smith said after Tuesday's win over Fenerbache and today, he and his team mates did just that. Maccabi Fox Tel Aviv, still without an injured Andrew Goudelock, escaped Russia with a 74:73 win over Kazan that put the team at 4:4 in Euroleague play.
The beginning was promising. Maccabi got off to a hot start, shooting 5/6 from beyond the arc and jumped to a 25:14 lead. But then the offense kind of stalled and the Russians battled back to force a close game all the way to the late stages of the fourth quarter. Kazan even led 67:63 before 2 three pointers from DJ Seeley and Yogev Ohayon put Maccabi back in control. Sonny Weems, who focused on creating for others and finished the game with 7 assists, scored 4 points in the last minute and Seeley pretty much sealed the deal from the free throw line.
Smith had 16 points, Colton Iverson added 12 and Seeley had 11. Victor Rudd and Maik Zirbes had 8 each. "We weren't at or best today", said Coach Rami Hadar, "but we played hard and well on defense, we got stops and that gave us a very important win. We got stuck on offence after the first the first quarter. We need to run more because that will make our lives easier, also in half court play".
Smith added: "we did a good job rebounding the ball as a team. We tried hard to get the ball out of Langford's hands on defense and that helped. We're fighting as a team in recent games and results follow. We just have to keep it up".
