Coach Rami Hadar has been preaching about defense and team spirit from day one, and today he finally got to see his players playing like they got the message. Maccabi Fox Tel Aviv completely shut down Vasilis Spanoulis and got a road win – 80:73 against Olympiacos.
Maccabi came into this game with a lot of momentum but has yet to notch a road win against top opposition. But it was the defense and the outside shooting by DJ Seeley and company that made it possible.
"We set the tone with our defense", said Seeley who had 19 points including 5 of 7 from outside. "Everyone knows we can play offense. We have a lot of guys who can score the ball so it was just a matter of getting our defense up to par". And nothing speaks to that more than the 6 points Spanoulis – one Europe's top guards – got.
"We played near perfect defense for three quarters and that won the game for us", said Hadar, ".We're making other teams shoot low percentage shots and play the third or fourth option on offense. This win derived from our defense and our team spirit. The players are buying in to both but we still have a way to go. I always knew that once we came together, we could do anything".
All five Maccabi players got to double digits. Colton Iverson had 14 points and 8 rebounds, Andrew Goudelock and Sonny Weems got 12 each with the latter adding 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Devin Smith scored 10. Maccabi is now 5:4 in Euroleague play and plays Kiryat Gat and Efes Anadolu at home next week.
