40 years after that historic win over CSKA in Virton, Maccabi will try to beat them again, this time at their own city of Moscow. It will not have any historic implications like that famous victory that “put us on the map”, but it could help keep any Euroleague playoff hopes alive. Coach Bagatskis will not have the injured Quincy Miller or Joe Alexander who stayed home. In the last meeting, in Tel Aviv, Maccabi raced to a big lead only to see it vanish with the Reds winning 80 – 76.

Coach Bagatskis: “In general everything is clear what we have to do to win in CSKA. We can't play softdefense. Our defense and offense have to be in balance. To me, CSKA is the strongest team in Europe and statistically have the best numbers in many positions. They had more time to prepare, we're playing our 5th game in 10 days”.

Colton Iverson: "We're going to be ready to fight and motivated for the game in Moscow. They have some key players like Milos Teodosic, Nando De-Colo, averaging more than 16, 17 points a game. We need to focus on stopping them, play physical and try to get a road win”.

Team finished it’s morning shootaround. Nikola Vujcic, team’s sports director, met with his ex-teammate and current euro star, Milos Teodosic.

The Yellows stayed close for 3 quarters but faded in the 4th against the Euro champs. Landesberg led all scorers with 19, Rudd had 14 and Smith finished with 11 and 9. Next week: Olympiacos in Tel Aviv

Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv fought hard and long but couldn’t get over the hump against one of the best teams in European basketball losing 81 – 93. Sylven Landesberg led all scorers with 19 points, Victor Rudd had 14, Colton Iverson 12, Devin Smith 11 (9 rebounds) and Itay Segev set career highs in the Euroleague with 10 points (4 – 4 from the field) and 4 rebounds. Segev, in his first Euroleague action, is coming off a foot injury that had him sidelined from the start of the season till the start of February.

For CSKA, the top performer was Nando De-Colo, one of the leading candidates to finish as the Euroleague’s MVP. De-Colo finished with 29 points in 29 minutes. Kyle Hines had 14 and 10 rebounds (of which 8 were offensive) and Milos Teodosic scored 11 points and dished out 8 assists.

CSKA led 26 – 14 after the first quarter, but Maccabi closed the gap after a 2nd quarter with 34 points. The score at halftime was 54 – 48 to CSKA who then led 69 – 60 after the 3rd quarter. In the 4th, it seemed like Maccabi’s players were too tired to continue the comeback and CSKA easily ended it with a double-figure lead. ForMaccabi it was the 3rd game this week. Leading scorer Andrew Goudelock sat out with an ankle injury.

Next week Maccabi will have two home games: on Monday against Maccabi Haifa in the Israeli league and on Thursday against European powerhouse, Olympiacos, who lost 64 – 67 toFenerbahce in Istanbul.
