After the impressive win over the EuroLeague reigning champs Fenerbache in the 14th fixture, Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv hoped to keep its momentum going against Malaga who ended up getting the 89:78 win at the Menorah Mivtachim arena. Norris Cole led the scorers in yellow with 16P Art added 15P and Pierre added 14P.
No recovery time for coach Spahija's squad as they're about to enter to an extremely busy week with three games. Coach Spahija and his squad will play back to back derbies with the first on Sunday in the Israeli Cup quarter finals on the road, two days later the second derby will be played in the domestic league at the Menorah Mivtachim arena. On Friday the yellows will travel to Madrid as they'll face them in the EuroLeague second round opener.
Coach Spahija's starting five: Jackson, Kane, Roll, Bolden and Art. Maccabi opened the game more focused as they got the 6:3 lead early in the game. Malaga tied the game (8:8) with a successful three pointer by Malaga, Roll reacted with a three pointer of his own to give the lead back to Maccabi, but Brooks tied the game again (13:13). McCallum gave Malaga the lead but Cole reacted right away and alongside Tyus gave Maccabi the 22:19 lead as the first quarter came to an end.
Cohen and John-Di led an 8:0 run as the locals were up 30:19 which forced Malaga to call for a timeout from which the greens came back with a three pointer by Diaz, however a mid-range shot by Tyus kept Maccabi's lead at a double digit (34:22), Cole continued scoring however the Spaniards started scoring from distance to take the yellow lead down to just eight points (40:32) with three minutes left in the second quarter. Jackson reacted however Malaga punished from distance again, Kane had the final word giving Maccabi 47:39 lead at halftime.
Malaga's momentum continued in the second half with Nedovic cutting down the yellow lead to 49:45. Cole and Bolden made their free throws but Maccabi struggled keeping their paint safe as they've allowed Malaga to tie the game (54:54) with five minutes left in the third quarter. Bolden scored a three pointer to give the yellows their lead back, however Diaz and Shermadini finished the third quarter with a 7:0 run to take the 61:58 lead with 10 minutes left in the game.
Wazczynski increased Malaga's lead but Pierre scored 10 points to give Maccabi the 67:66 lead, Art increased the lead to three points however the Spaniards kept their composure with Shermadini giving the 70:69 lead to Malaga. Mashour scored but it was Shermadini again who set the score at 74:71 with five minutes left in the game. Malaga continued scoring from distance to claim the 89:78 victory.
