Spahija: “We have to play good defense and get more situations on the open court”

Spahija: “We have to play good defense and get more situations on the open court”
It’s derby time and it only means one thing, Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv are all in to paint the city in yellow and blue as they would leave it all out on the floor to remain unbeaten domestically. (Sport5, 21:00 local).

“As a coach I cannot be frustrated”, said Coach Neven Spahija as he addressed the issue of injuries. “It’s a problem to play without two point guards, even three point guards but it is what it is. We try to set up on our system to play without them and to go forward and waiting for them to  be healthy, It is what it is we have to play against any opponent with this roster and we’re going to do it tomorrow. What you saw against Olympiacos and Be’er Sheva is our way to handle the situation. That’s the weakness in our system but at least let’s play defense on this level in Israeli championship we have to play good defense and get more situations on the open court”.

“We all know the meaning of the game, it’s to win”, said DeAndre Kane. “It’s more than a basketball game, it’s for bragging rights for the fans, for our club it’s for the history so we just want to get the win”.

When asked about playing without Scottie Wilbekin and Jeremy Pargo so early in the season Kane replied: “I feel like everybody on this team is important they’re just as important as everyone else so I think we can win any game without those two players of course we need them they are great in what they are doing for our team”.

“We all took part in the conversation about the derby especially the returners to tell the new guys what the derby is about and how much it means to the club, to the fans, to us and it’s getting everyone really excited about tomorrow”, said John DiBartolomeo. “Missing great players like that is tough for any team, it gives other people an opportunity to step up and we do it together and that’s how we’ll manage. Derby is always a lot of intensity, a lot of excitement, we’re looking forward to it, it’ll be a different kind of challenge for us and we need to come ready to play”.

With the bragging rights for the city at stake Coach Neven Spahija and his squad knew that there can only be one outcome when the derby comes to town. Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv imposed their will on both ends of the floor from the tipoff as they were ahead in double digits at the end of the first quarter, the yellows increased their lead with every minute passing in the game as they made short work of Hapoel with an 89:57 win.

Coach Spahija's starting five: Black, Roll, Kane, Cohen and John-Di. Kane scored a corner three to start off the derby (3:0). Black's dominance on both ends of the floor was very well felt as the yellows took the early 7:2 lead. Kane's transition three made it 13:2. Maccabi capitalized on every open look raining threes and rocking the rim as they the scoreboard showed 23:5 in the first quarter. The
reds tried to stop Maccabi however the hosts kept pressing and swinging having the 28:14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The squad in yellow and blue started the second quarter exactly like they finished the first contesting every shot and rocking the rim
en route of a 34:14 lead. Maccabi got the job done time and again as they increased their lead to 44:19 with just over three minutes left in the first half. Ginat scored for Hapoel whose late damage control ended the second quarter with the scoreboard showing 46:29.

Maccabi started the third quarter firing on all cylinders not allowing the reds to even dream of a comeback as they increased their lead to 54:31. John-Di's shot from deep crossed the 30 points barrier (62:31). Caloiaro and Levi scored back to back threes to make it 68:35. Moore scored from distance but Levi reacted with four points for Maccabi to make it 73:38. The
reds finished the third quarter with a 5:0 run as they trail 73:43.

Kane capitalized on an offensive board to make it 75:43 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Both teams traded blows from deep with Maccabi capitalizing to make 86:51 with two minutes remaining in the game, Roll scored another
three pointer for the squad in yellow and blue en route of a very one sided derby as they claim the 89:57 win.
