"We're going to finish strong"
It is playoff time, and the Israeli derby is here once again as the reigning champs, Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv will face Hapoel in a best of five series starting this Thursday (21:00, local). The crew in yellow and blue has started to count the minutes until the tipoff and they are locked and loaded on the final goal of the season: retaining their championship.
"I think that it's nice that the league has a Tel Aviv derby in the playoffs" said coach Sfairopoulos. It'll give the sport another push. The most important thing is that the games will be good and that we will judge them by the players, I hope that there will be no violence in these games and that we will talk about sports because it is the most important thing". Coach Giannis also added: "Let's protect the sport that we love".
"It starts as a team, just channeling our focus to the basketball part”, said Michael Roll. “There’s going to be a lot of nonsense that goes on around the court and we need to try and ignore it and any aggression that might come we need to channel it into things that we need to do and focus on the basketball part. We don’t need extra motivation right now, it’s the playoffs, it’s May; we know what time it is and it’s time for us to come in here and take care of business and it’s what we’ve been practicing for the whole year playing all these games. We’re motivated we don’t need extra motivation, now its money time and we do it to have fun and do it".
"It’s been a long season a roller coaster of a season”, said Tarik Black ahead of the first playoff game versus Hapoel Tel Aviv. “Through ups and downs, pivots and changes - we’ve all stuck through together so that’s essentially what it was all about. I think there were some outside varies that played to those matches going that way but we’re prepared for the future, we get prepared for what’s in front of us right now and we’re going to come out and do what we do. We’re all professional basketball players and I am up to believe that there is a line that needs to be respected amongst men and amongst basketball a thing that we do for a living that should not be crossed but at the same time we’re in the last leg of the season  going towards the championship and with that being said that’s the most important part of the season right now and that’s what matters the most is finishing this thing off, we’ve worked so hard to get to this place, we fought hard that we’re not going to compromise is it now that we’re at the finish line and we can run this through we’re going to finish it strong".

Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv took the 1:0 lead in the Israeli playoffs with an amazing 89:67 home win. The yellows showed from the tip-off that they mean business with Black controlling Maccabi's aerial space with 5B in the first quarter. The squad of coach Sfairopoulos took the double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The reds tried to get back into the game but on a night like this the hosts could not be denied as they kept increasing their lead until the end of the game to send a message with a great home win.

Coach Sfairopoulos' starting five: Wilbekin, Zoosman. Caloiaro, Cohen and Black. Tarik started the game magnificently on both ends of the court as the yellows took the 8:0 lead. Ginat scored for Hapoel but Maccabi's great team effort kept the train in yellow and blue running to a 16:4 lead. Shuler and Green scored to keep the reds in the game but Scottie and Kane answered with a 5:0 run (23:9). Limonad was the last to score in the first quarter making 23:11 at the end of the first quarter.

Kane started the second quarter with a corner three (26:11); Kane's great intensity on both ends of the floor was contagious as the yellows' increased their lead to 32:17. Every basket made by Hapoel was answered immediately by the crew in yellow and blue as Cohen made it 42:27 from the free throw line. McNeil scored a wing three forcing coach Sfairopoulos to call for a timeout (42:30). Tyus connected with Wilbekin for a thunderous alley-oop dunk, but McNeil had the final say in the first half as his team trails 46:34.

Hapoel went on a 7:2 run at the beginning of third to trim Maccabi's lead to 48:41. Both sides traded blows with the reds capitalizing forcing coach Sfairopoulos to call for a timeout with the scoreboard showing 53:46. Zoosman's pressure on the defensive end paid off big as it sparked Maccabi's offense again (57:47). Green's free throws brought Hapoel closer to the yellows, but it was only momentarily as John-Di woke up the thousands in the stands leading Maccabi to an 8:0 run, but McNeil was the last to score in the third quarter (65:55).

John-Di and Kane increased Maccabi's lead at the beginning of the fourth, Howell and McNeil tried to trim Maccabi's lead again, but a great team effort by Maccabi ended with Kane nailing the open wing three to keep Hapoel at bay (72:58). Limonad scored on transition but Tarik made both of his free throws to keep Maccabi ahead 76:62. The squad of coach Sfairopoulos hustled on both ends of the floor not allowing Hapoel to breathe enroute of an 8:0 run (84:67). The yellows continued to push forward until the final second beating Hapoel 89:97 in playoffs game 1.
