Eight games into the 2019-2020 Israel Basketball Premier League, Maccabi Fox Tel Aviv, looks sharper than ever before. Giannis Sfairopoulos's squad protected their 100% win rate with an 89:62 away victory over Ironi Nahariya, as the visitors from Tel Aviv got Omri Casspi and Tarik Black back from injuries. The Yellow & Blue head back home to host Bayern Munich on Thursday evening,
Maccabi's starting five featured Scottie Wilbekin, Elijah Bryant, Yovel Zoosman, Quincy Acy, and Tarik Black. Acy opened the game with a 4 point play after hitting a three while being fouled, and Bryant with two straight buckets gave the visitors an 8:2 advantage. Ex Maccabi Itay Segev, kept the hosts in the contest after scoring 4 points to cut it down, 10:6. From that point, Maccabi's defense looked great with Zoosman laying in two easy points after a steal that ramped up the lead, 15:8. Wilbekin, with a step-back three and Casspi scoring both shots from the line, opened up a double-digit advantage after 7:30 minutes, 24:13. Maccabi's last 7 points (including Casspi's two) all came from the free-throw line, giving them a 29:15 lead after one.
Dominic Waters and Jerrell McNeal tried to reduce the visitor's advantage, but Casspi and Black didn't allow that to happen, and with Tyler Dorsey scoring his first points of the game, 35:20 Maccabi. Three-pointers by John DiBartolomeo and Deni Avdija increased the lead to 19 midway through the second quarter. But then, the purples stepped it up defensively, not allowing the Yellow & Blue to score in three straight minutes to minimize the score to 43:31. Coach Sfairopoulos called two timeouts to wake up his guys, who responded with shots from behind the arc (Dorsey and Wilbekin), and a three-point play by Jake Cohen gave the Israeli champions a 52:36 lead going into halftime.
After shaky minutes at the start of the third quarter, Maccabi's ramped it up defensively, going on a 14:0 run lead by the captain DiBartolomeo, 67:42. Segev tied his career-high with a slam, but Dorsey ended the quarter with a corner three to give the Yellow & Blue a commanding lead with 10 minutes left, 70:46.
At the start of the final quarter, Segev was able to record a new career-high in points (17), as on the other end, Wilbekin hit his fourth shot from behind the arc, 79:57. Cohen finished twice strong under the basket while drawing fouls on the plays, to reach 10 points and ten rebounds, as Dorsey, Avdija and Zoosman increased Maccabi's lead. The Yellow & Blue stay undefeated in the domestic league, beating Nahariya, 89:62.
