Giannis Sfairopoulos will be the head coach of Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv. The coach signed a contract throughout 2020 and requested to bring his own assistant, he will guide the team in its upcoming EuroLeague game in Istanbul against Anadolu Efes.
Coach Giannis Sfairopoulos told the Maccabi official website: “I’m very proud to be a part of such a big club with a glorious tradition like Maccabi Tel Aviv. I want to thank the team owners, the management and to any one who made this happen and had trust in me to be the head coach of Maccabi. To the fans I want to say that I will do everything in my power for us to succeed. Now it's the time to work hard with all the players to change the situation of the team. I believe in the team and in this roster and have I a complete faith in them. We will fight together, The players and I have to be ready to give 100%, now is not the time for additional words but for work and actions”.
For the past four years 51 year old Greek coach, was at the helm of Olympiacos Piraeus. He led Olympiacos to 2014/15 EuroLeague finals game after beating Barcelona in a best of five playoff series and CSKA in the semifinals, Olympiacos finished that season as the EuroLeague runner ups after losing to Real Madrid in the finals.
Giannis also led Olympiacos to the EuroLeague championship game in the 2016/17 season after beating Anadolu Efes in the playoffs and CSKA in the semis but this time his team lost to Fenerbahce and Zeljko Obradovic in the finals.
Coach Sfairopoulos won the Greek league championship in 2015 and 2016 after beating Olympiacos’ arch rival Panathinaikos.His team finished the regular season in the domestic league for three years in a row (2015-2017). Coach Giannis Sfairopoulos has also worked at Panionios and was an assistant coach at the Houston Rockets.
Sfairopoulos has also an Israeli connection as he worked as Tsvika Sherf’s assistant in Paok Saloniki (1998/99), and as Pini Gershon’s assistant in Olympiacos a decade ago.
