Until the early 40's, the colors of Maccabi's uniform were white & Blue. In 1942, as an act of solidarity with the European Jews who were persecuted by the Nazis and were forced to wear a yellow patch, Joseph Mirmovic a footballer for Maccabi Tel Aviv proposed that the team should wear yellow jerseys alongside the traditional blue color.
The horrible stories from Europe regarding the yellow patch and what it symbolized have made their way to Israel and left everyone who heard about it shocked and devastated.
This led to Mirmovic proposition to be approved by the management of the Maccabi World Union, who decided that from now on the Maccabi symbol – Star of David, will be highlighted on the color of yellow on all of the jerseys in all of the various sport departments of the Maccabi branches.
And so it began, from that day, all the Maccabi teams (Basketball, football volleyball etc.) have started wearing yellow, which became the trademark of the team and its fans who are known and called "the yellows".
