Arriel McDonald’s journey with Maccabi Tel Aviv started in 1999, coming in as a replacement for Oded Kattash. A former star at the University of Minnesota, McDonald went undrafted in the 1994 NBA Draft, and made the jump to European hoops. He spent five seasons in various European teams before ultimately signing with Maccabi as a relatively unknown player.

Although there were doubts surrounding him, McDonald took control of Maccabi's backcourt with authority. In his first season in Yad Eliyahu, the point guard led the team to the European Cup finals, only to lose to the same Kattash and his Panathinaikos. But the next year, in the SuproLeague, McDonald and Maccabi returned to the finals, this time getting revenge by beating the Greeks.

Arriel McDonald left after his third seasons, but made his mark. In three seasons with Maccabi, he, alongside Maccabi legends Anthony Parker and Nate Huffman, led the Yellow and Blue to three consecutive Israeli Cup and Israeli League Championship titles. Personally, he won the Final Four MVP in 2001, having scored 21 points in the title game. That was not the first time McDonald earned the most valuable player award, as he was named the 2000 Israeli Basketball League MVP.

After McDonald wrapped up his Maccabi tenure, in which he averaged 11.5 points per game, he went on to play a few more seasons in the EuroLeague before announcing his retirement. Representing the Yellow and Blue for 3 memorable seasons, Ariel McDonald will be remembered as a Maccabi Great who had a knack for winning.
