Nate Huffman’s memorable Maccabi Tel Aviv career began in 1999, a couple of years after completing a legendary college career both at Lansing Community College and Central Michigan University. Despite putting up spectacular numbers as one of the best centers in the Mid-America conference, Huffman went undrafted, and wound up signing with the Los Angeles Clippers. He ultimately got cut, and after a short stint in the Continental Basketball Association and in Spain, Huffman signed with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
A dominant, quick center, Huffman possessed a wide range of skills in the paint. He displayed nothing but success during his three years with Maccabi, bringing European glory back to Tel Aviv, along with winning all the available local titles .
In his first season, the big man helped Maccabi reach its first continental final in nine years. In 2001, however, was the most dominant year for Huffman. That season, Maccabi Tel Aviv won SuproLeague title by beating Panathinaikos in the final. During that remarkable season, Huffman averaged 17.5 points and 9 rebounds per game, which led to him winning Israeli Basketball Premier League MVP and the SuproLeague MVP.
In July 2002, Huffman was rewarded for his strong play, and landed himself a 3-year contract with the Toronto Raptors. Unfortunately, Huffman ended up playing just 7 games with Toronto, as a major knee injury derailed his career and lead to his early retirement.
Nate Huffman passed away in 2015 after a battle with bladder cancer. Even though he was only a member of the Yellow and Blue for a short stint, those were 3 remarkable and unforgettable seasons for both Huffman and Maccabi Tel Aviv. And for that, Nate Huffman will always be a Maccabi legend.
