The story of Jim “Jimbo” Boatwright’s legendary Maccabi career began in 1974. Boatwright moved to Israel after graduating from Utah State University, where he starred on the basketball team as an accurate shooter and earned a degree in political science.

In the first couple of seasons in Yellow-and-Blue, Boatwright only played in the Israeli league, due to restrictions on foreign players. In 1976, though, he began playing both in domestic competition and European competition, until his retirement in 1981. During these five years, the clever forward was part of the team that won the Israeli League Championships and the Israeli Cup Championships every single season. In 1977, Boatwright was the top scorer in the European Championship finals game with 26 points, where Maccabi won their first ever European championship. Four years later, in 1981, Boatwright played a prevalent role in bringing a second European title to the Yellow and Blue.

But Jimbo's connection with Maccabi and Israel was about more then just basketball. After his second season with the team, Boatwright converted to Judaism, became an Israeli citizen, and was part of the Israeli Basketball National Team.

Jim Boatwright passed away in 2013 after a battle with liver cancer, but will forever be a part of the exclusive club of Maccabi Tel Aviv legends.
