Earl Williams’ legendary Maccabi career began after he played 5 seasons in the NBA and in Europe. He was selected in the 3rd round of the 1974 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, and played for four teams in four seasons. In 1979, after a brief stint in Sweden, Williams moved to Israel to play for Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Williams’ career in Yellow and Blue got off to a hot start. In his first season he averaged 17.5 points per game, and led Maccabi back to the European Cup finals, only to lose to Real Madrid. Williams then played a pivotal role in Maccabi’s success in the 1980-81 season, leading the team back to the finals, this time prevailing over Sinudyne Bologna. His team also won the Intercontinental Cup, along with an Israeli League Championship and State Cup.

A feisty and tough Center, Williams continued to dominate the paint in his next two seasons with Maccabi, winning a pair of Israeli League Championships and a pair of State Cups.

As Israel became an integral part of Williams’ life, he converted to Judaism and became an Israeli citizen. Years later, Earl Williams is remembered as a Maccabi great, and will forever be a Maccabi legend.
